Itzhak Perlman

[ Erato / Warner Classics / 3 CD ]

Release Date: Friday 28 August 2015

31 August 2015 sees the seventieth birthday of Itzhak Perlman, the supreme violinist of his time, adored by audiences around the world and a musician whose powerful but sympathetic artistic personality provides a model for the players who have followed him. More than fifty years into his career, Perlman remains a very lively and influential figure on the world's music scene.

To celebrate Perlman's landmark birthday, in September 2015 Warner Classics is releasing Itzhak Perlman - The Complete Warner Recordings, a fifty-nine-album set which contains all the recordings he made for EMI Classics (his principal label) and also for Teldec - including some previously unreleased recordings.Alongside this luxurious release a 3CD Digipak compilation gathers the quintessence of Itzhak Perlman's fine art remastered in 24-bit/96kHz sound at Abbey Road Studios: The Perlman Sound!

No-one could deny that Itzhak Perlman holds a special place in the world of music - and no-one could define it more eloquently than his old friend and colleague, the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim: "It is quite impossible to imagine today's violin heritage without the absolute musical genius of Perlman." The most obvious manifestation of that genius is the famous Perlman Sound - lustrous, warm and generous. A sound that, in the flesh, really can fill a hall, its impact compounded by often astounding virtuosity; and yet - to coin a cliché far too lightly applied to musicians of extraordinary talent, skill and dedication - Perlman makes it all look so easy. In fact, he communicates a positive joy in his playing. As Edward Rothstein wrote most perceptively in a New York Times review of a recital at Manhattan's Avery Fisher Hall in 1982:
"Mr. Perlman can do just about anything he wants on the violin. But he is not the sort of virtuoso who reaches into a listener's guts, or who has the audience balancing with him on the sliver of contact between bow and string. Nor is he the master technician whose patter chills a listener with glistening perfection ... Instead of being a virtuoso in the 19th-century mold - a priest, demon, spokesman and ruler - Mr. Perlman might be called a sort of democratic virtuoso. His appeal is that he is one of us, a person who appears on stage and plays his music. And when he plays, one marvels at his execution, relishes his sound and experiences a sympathy for his musical expressions that involves empathy, respect and pleasure."

His recordings have received a total of 15 Grammy Awards and in 2008 he was honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Those recordings have helped to make the 'Perlman Sound' the gold standard to which many violinists of subsequent generations aspire.
