In its fourth edition, the Annecy Classic Festival has become a major player in the national and international cultural landscape. In residence at the 2013 Annecy Classic Festival, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic closes the festival and joins forces with its iconic conductor Yuri Temirkanov.

Temirkanov conducts the orchestra in a performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's lush Sheherazade, with its intoxicating scents and the glowing, oriental colours - a journey through One Thousand and One Nights.

Together with multi-gifted musician Denis Matsuev (winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition), the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra invites us on a journey, whose secret lies in Rachmaninov's famous Piano Concerto No.2 and the Symphonic Dances. Denis Matsuev, the "Siberian Bear" as they call him, interprets the Piano Concerto No. 2 virtuously and passionately.

"One of the particular pleasures of this filmed concert is watching the avuncular maestro Yuri Temirkanov direct a group of players who know his every gesture so intimately. What wonderful and subtle effects he can achieve with the absolute minimum - less is more - and the sound he produces seems to reflect his podium personality." (Gramophone)

"Denis Matsuev's Rachmaninov Second is a powerful and strongly spirited rendition that one can only praise. Though briskly paced for the most part, Matsuev catches the lush lyricism with great sensitivity in all three movements. He imparts a kinetic sense to the livelier music in the outer movements as well, ultimately turning in one of the more memorable versions of this concerto in recent times, not least because of excellent support from Temirkanov and the splendid St. Petersburg Philharmonic" (ClassicalNet)
