Recorded in 2014 at the beginning of a series marking his 85th birthday season, Christoph von Dohnányi leads the Philharmonia Orchestra in a rousing live performance of Bruckner's monumental Ninth Symphony, which stands alongside the other epoch-defining Ninth symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler.

"This beautifully prepared account of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony was the Philharmonia's contribution to a complete cycle of the composer's symphonies performed by a variety of orchestras at the 2014 Salzburg Festival. Christoph von Dohnányi, the orchestra's Principal Conductor from 1997 to 2008, secures playing of exceptional transparency and expressiveness from his old band. Dynamics and balance are perfectly judged throughout, allowing details of the score to be heard that are often masked in other performances. Dohnányi's new recording is distinguished by the clarity with which it presents Bruckner's score as well as the excellence of its sound. There is no audience noise and applause has been excised." (Gramophone Sept 2015)

"Dohnányi realises all aspects of this extraordinary work, both its gaunt grandeur…and its warmth and fragility…the sublime third movement has everything, including that terrifying last climax, which builds to so brutal a dissonance that no other composer has matched it since. The uneasy dying away after the awe-struck silence is perfectly managed…[the performance] is one of the most powerful that the whole literature of music can provide."
