"Both voice and orchestra and the ambience of the Grosser Saal in the Musikverein are faithfully caught, with no lack of bloom. A treasurable disc." (Penguin Guide. Strauss 4 Last Songs. Lisa Della Casa)

"The presentation, with Klaus-Jurgen Wussow the admirably committed narrator, is most dramatic. Szell's conducting is superb, the music marvellously characterized, and the songs are movingly sung by Pilar Lorengar." (Penguin Guide. Beethoven Egmont incidental music. George Szell)

"Solti's superb recording with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (one of his finest) show that Solti could relax in music which he loved, without sacrificing concentration and drama." Rosette. Penguin Guide. Schubert 9th Symphony. Georg Solti)

"Mehta's account of the second symphony is far more impressive than one might have expected, and is indeed one of his most distinguished achievements. The refinement of the VPO playing, recorded with glorious richness and clarity, places it among the finest versions of this symphony available," (Penguin Guide. Mahler 2nd Symphony. Zubin Mehta)

"Chailly directs a strong and refined reading of the Glagolitic Mass, with fine detail brought out in the glowing Decca recording...fine idiomatic singing and a virtuoso display from Donald Trotter in the final organ solo." (Penguin Guide. Janacek. Glagolitic Mass. Riccardo Chailly)

"Khachaturian came to Vienna in 1962 to record these inspired performances, and this Decca record is the one to go for. It is superbly remastered to restore and even improve on the demonstration quality of the original LP." (Penguin Guide. Khachaturian Ballets. Composer)

"Kondrashin's Vienna performance of the New World was one of Decca's first demonstration CDs. Recorded in the Sofiensaal, every detail of Dvorak's orchestration is revealed within a highly convincing perspective," (Penuin Guide. Dvorak. New World Symphony. Kiril Kondrashin)

"Reiner's coupling of Brahms and Dvorak dances was a favourite record of the late John Culshaw, and the 1960 recording wears it's years fairly lightly. Reiner's affection of the music is obvious. Dazzling." (Penguin Guide. Brahms/Dvorak Dances. Fritz Reiner - note: now with restored missing dances).

"Solti's Schumann interpretations are full of his personal brand of lyrical intensity. The most compelling performance of the cycle is the Second Symphony, with its passionate slow movement..and with a felling of spontaneous lyricism paramount." (Penguin Guide. Schumann works. Georg Solti

"The recording sees Von Karajan spotlighting the delightful orchestral details and drama in the scores. The orchestra plays with sumptuous tone and a keen sense of drama. Kudos to the Decca engineers for providing warm, natural sound." (ArchivMusic.com. Tchaikovsky Ballets. Herbert von Karajan)

"The VPO plays with towering commitment and the recording further helps to convey the sense of the music's vaulted splendour." (Gramophone on Bruckner Symphony No. 4. Böhm)

"Munchinger's performance of the delightful Rosamunde music glows with an affectionate warmth and understanding which places this as one of his very best records...the VPO is at its magnificent best" Penguin Guide. Schubert Rosamunde. Karl Munchinger.
