Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) is acknowledged as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, but his renown in the music of Debussy and Ravel in particular has led to other areas of his recorded legacy being comparatively neglected. This set aims to redress that balance by presenting his rarely reissued complete post-war commercial recordings, made for UK Columbia, of Brahms, Schubert and Schumann. Most of these title are not otherwise currently available on CD.

"There is some remarkable playing here...He was a fine Bach player, and his straightforward, stylishly beautiful playing suits the composers herein. He combines passionate and piercing intensity, turning on a sixpence between these extremes in Carnaval...Lovingly remastered." Classical Music, August 2017 *****

"Gieseking's artistry, whether at its finest or least convincing repays constant consideration. He remains an artist with a permanent rather than temporary place in the pantheon of great pianists." International Piano, September 2017 ****

"Chopin doesn't feature prominently in Gieseking's discography, yet the two pieces here were programmed often by him in concert. The Berceuse is a lullaby, gentle, lyrical and well-paced. Despite the left-hand metric regularity, the performance is devoid of monotony. His luminous tone is awash with tonal shadings. The Barcarolle is delicately voiced, elegant and brims over with poetic insights." MusicWeb International, June 2017
