FELIX MENDELSSOHN
Mendelssohn: String Quartets Nos. 2 & 4
Quatuor Arod, with Marianne Crebassa (mezzo-soprano)

[ Erato / Warner Classics / CD ]

Release Date: Monday 18 December 2017

The Arod Quartet, founded just four years ago in Paris, makes its debut on Erato with an album of Mendelssohn, tracing his life through his works for string quartet. The composer has been important for the ensemble, not least by helping it win two major competitions.

The members of the Arod have been mentored by both the Ebène and Artemis Quartet, and they collaborate here with a further Erato artist, the mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa, in a performance of the song 'Ist es wahr?'

"The A minor Quartet is a youthful masterpiece on a par with the preceding Octet…Here they deliver what must surely be one of the most intense, detailed and passionate accounts of it ever recorded…The first movement Allegro kicks off at a frantic pace one imagines cannot help degenerating into a scramble - but which never does, such is these players' hair-trigger clarity of articulation and volatility of expression." BBC Music Chamber Choice Christmas 2017

"It can be said that the string quartet is in a healthy state - it is rich with numerous works spanning three centuries. We also have fantastic ensembles today such as the young Quatuor Arod. This French group really bring these brooding works by Mendelssohn to life with their youthful vitality. They are recorded well with even balance and clarity." Nicholas Butler
