Cellist Edgar Moreau and pianist David Kadouch have some pleasurable surprises in store with this programme of French sonatas from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The composers are Franck, Poulenc and two little-known figures, Rita Strohl and Fernand de La Tombelle. Forming an adjunct to the programme is the world premiere recording of a piece by Poulenc: Souvenirs, written in 1944. As the French magazine Télérama has written: "Both known as outstanding soloists, David Kadouch and Edgar Moreau also form a close-knit, well-balanced chamber duo, playing with passion and commitment."

"Fervent and passionate, [the Strohl] proves tremendously listenable; and here Moreau and Kadouch give it all they've got…[In the Franck] they seem at times too get up…The Poulenc, however, flowers surprisingly in this near-excess of care with a rewarding, kaleidoscopic range of colour." BBC Music

"The great thing we're learning about Moreau in the recording studio is that, while under-recorded repertoire has been something of a calling card thus far, ultimately this is just the icing on an overall story of a cellist whose recordings are worth hearing whatever he's playing...his Poulenc and Franck sonatas stand out for their subtlety and poise...this is a standout album." Gramophone Editor's Choice March 2018

"The youthful duo Edgar Moreau and David Kadouch play with great panache in what can be regarded as a more unusual programme. It is a wonderful exposure to some different pieces especially the sonata by Rita Strohl. The arrangement of Franck's violin sonata is also well worth hearing. This album is recorded with fine clarity and balance." Nicholas Butler
