L'elisir d'amore is an 'essential' Italian comic opera and this 1958 recording, recorded with the forces of La Scala, Milan has a distinctively Italian pedigree. If its Nemorino, Luigi Alva, was born in Peru, he trained and established his reputation in Milan. He is paired with the enchantingly spirited Rosanna Carteri as Adina, while two of Italy's finest baritones, Rolando Panerai and Giuseppe Taddei, sing Belcore and Dulcamara. Donizetti's delightful score is in the hands of a master of the bel canto idiom, Tullio Serafin.
