A delightful prospect: to compare and contrast this pair of radiant Quintets for piano and winds. A work of 'maturity' - the twenty-eight-year-old Mozart considered it "among his best" - and a 'youthful effort' penned by Beethoven at 26. Dating from an auspicious phase in each composer's career, both pieces met with an enthusiastic reception. Their unapologetically theatrical character is not lost on the high-spirited virtuosos who make up the period-instrument Dialoghi Ensemble, heard here in its harmonia mundi début.
"It is a real delight to hear this coupling so thoughtfully and lovingly played on period instruments and recorded in deluxe sound." MusicWeb
"Ensemble Dialoghi perform K452 on period instruments, which provide a wonderful, juicy sound right from the opening E flat chord. The piano initially comes as a disappointment…Get past the slow introduction, however, and pianist Cristina Esclapez demonstrates that there's plenty more grunt to the sound once the left hand travels down the keyboard. It all develops into a lovely performance of this lovable work." Gramophone
