[ Warner Classics / CD ]

Release Date: Tuesday 15 October 2019

Dong Hyek Lim takes two pianistic roles on this all-Rachmaninov album: soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Alexander Vedernikov in the much-loved Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, and duo partner to his mentor, the great Martha Argerich, in the composer's two-piano transcription of the enthralling and enigmatic Symphonic Dances. Lim's credentials in Russian music are rooted in the formative period he spent as a young student at Moscow's Central School of Music and Conservatory.

"Lim is a former protégé of Martha Argerich and she joins him for the Symphonic Dances, long a party piece of hers…So where does this new one fit into the scheme of things...It scores highly on physical brilliance and Lim follows Argerich's lead in the improvisatory way they set the scene out of which the first movement's dreamy melody emerges." Gramophone
