Franz Berwald was a one-off, who only achieved renown in his native Sweden near the end of his life but whose five symphonies (one early, then four numbered, mature works each with an evocative subtitle) absorb influences such as Mendelssohn and Schumann into an always personal and quirky language. History now judges him the leading Scandinavian composer of the 19th century, and the always-tuneful, exhilarating symphonies are increasingly popular in concert halls.

Tracks:

Symphony No. 1 in G minor 'Sinfonie sérieuse'
Symphony No. 4 in E flat major 'Sinfonie naïve'
