Henryk Gorecki (b. 1933) is one of Poland's eminent contemporary composers. He emerged as part of a Polish avant-guard under the old-style communist regime, but it wasn't until the early 90s that he came to international prominence with his Symphony Number 3, or "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs." It stormed up the British pop charts, which is an indication of its accessibility.
