Busoni's vast Piano Concerto lasts for nearly 70 minutes, and as well as the usual piano and orchestra combination requires, in the last of its five movements, a choir of men's voices. It was completed in 1904 and first performed in Berlin on 4 November of that year.

John Ogdon was born in Nottingham in 1937 and died in 1989. In 1962 he was joint winner, along with Vladimir Ashkenazy, of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. The majority of his recordings were made for EMI.
