Antal Dorati's enthusiasm for the music of Haydn resulted in many highly distinguished recordings for both Decca and Philips during the late 1960s through the 1970s. His complete cycle of the 104 numbered symphonies (plus the two appendix symphonies "A" and "B") remains one of the greatest recording achievements of the gramophone.
Dorati's was the first cycle of all the symphonies to be recorded and remained so for many years afterwards. Despite the many symphonies to have been recorded by period instrument ensembles in the intervening years Dorati's interpretations still retain a freshness and vigour that is hard to match.
