Hans Abrahamsen's Schnee (2008) is a gorgeous marvel which encapsulates winter. The instrumental cycle, already a classic of the twenty-first century, comprises a set of ten canons making up an hour of ghostly, feathery music. There is no hurrying, but great depth. As Abrahamsen himself says: 'In Schnee, a single moment is stretched as far as possible. At some point, the music disappears. There is just a breath of air left'.
"The sounds Abrahamsen craves, white and translucent across a large range of actual expression, hugely complex on the page but delectably simple to the ear, are exceptionally realised and recorded here." Gramophone April 2022 Editor's Choice
"At different times the listener may feel lost in a blizzard, pierced by icicles or battered by an Arctic wind, although direct illustration is never Abrahamsen's purpose. Structured in the form of ten canons, the hour-long piece carves out a meditative wintry space for the listener's own thoughts and feelings." The Times
