One of the century's defining operatic tenors, Carlo Bergonzi, died after a short illness on 26th July at the age of 90. Celebrated for his interpretations of the great Verdi roles in particular, he was as much as home at The Metropolitan Opera, where he sang over 300 times, as he was in his native La Scala.
Gramophone Magazine awarded him their 'Lifetime Achievement' Award in 2000. For The New York Times, he was "one of the 20th century's most distinguished operatic tenors, renowned for the refined interpretive taste and keen musical intelligence he brought to his art". For writers such as John Steane, Bergonzi held a unique position among tenors: "More than any other Italian tenor on record, he combines power, beauty, intensity and elegance." (Steane, The Grand Tradition: Seventy Years of Singing on Record, 1900 to 1970,).
