George Gershwin was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants to the United States. Born in Brooklyn on 26 September 1898, he had only a rudimentary musical education, but his talent was such that he rose from humble beginnings as a Tin Pan Alley song-plugger at the age of 16 to writing his first hit songs and musicals at 21, to composing masterpieces like the jazz-based classic Rhapsody in Blue at 26, the Piano Concerto in F and the tone poem An American in Paris before he was 30, and the opera Porgy and Bess at 37.

Adroitly balancing the "serious" and "popular" sides of his art, he enjoyed great financial success and prestige and was believed to have had many love affairs. Tragically, he died of a brain tumour in Hollywood, aged only 38.
