'These transcriptions of religious works hold a special place in Liszt's output and show a different side to this often misunderstood composer.

An especially effective example of this is his setting of the Ave verum corpus by Mozart, which is a very simple arrangement for solo piano but perfectly conveys the essence of this beautiful choral work.

His gift for embellishing and expanding on original works is also evident in the two arrangements of Rossini's choral works, with them becoming even more expressive and expansive in a true Lisztian sense.

A personal favourite has to be his transcription of the love scene from Goldschmidt's oratorio Die Sieben Todsünden - an achingly beautiful and delicate rendering which includes moments that are reminiscent of Liszt's own second Ballade.

Overall, a disc of unexpectedly intimate and private treasures.' - Martin Cousin
