"Tate here shows ... how winning a relaxed approach to these masterpieces can be. It keeps making you think what a delightful old man Haydn must have been." (Gramophone)
Haydn's last twelve Symphonies were written for the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. Although born in Bonn Salomon moved to London in the early 1780s, where he worked as a composer and violinist. He is best remembered today as an organiser of concerts. He brought Joseph Haydn to London in 1791-92 and 1794-95 where Haydn wrote these, his London Symphonies.
