There can be few, if any, musicians who have singlehandedly done so much in the establishment of resources for musical performance than Sir Thomas Beecham.
Sir Thomas Beecham was a singular figure in the history of classical music. An autodidact conductor and heir to the Beecham pharmaceutical fortune, he used his wealth to revolutionize the British musical landscape. Through founding orchestras and organizing opera seasons, he left an indelible mark on 20th-century music. This affable, brilliant, usually charming, ever-communicative, quick-witted, dedicated conductor was the most gifted executive musician England has ever produced.
This box set brings together all the stereo recordings from his rich discography for Columbia Gramophone and HMV. The albums are presented as original pairing programmes, with two of them sometimes placed on the same CD when they were too short. Many of these albums were produced at a turning point in recording history, when the industry was moving from mono to stereo recordings; some originally released in mono were later released in stereo for only part of the original program as not all works had been recorded in both mono and stereo.
The main recordings displayed in this box are the legendary Carmen with Victoria de los Angeles, Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Peer Gynt featuring Ilse Hollweg's Solveig, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, various Delius recordings, a French Romantic Album (with Fauré's Dolly and the First Suite from Carmen), Franck's Symphony in D minor, Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade, and the famous 'Lollipops' albums.
