The performance, led by conductor Rafael Kubelík with Bavarian forces, is considered excellent for its sheer drama and musicality. The oratorio itself is noted as a serious, monumental, and beautiful late-romantic piece, though quite long.

Jessye Norman is one of the "star-studded stable of soloists" and her performance is described as very good. She has a wide range and powerful voice that serves the dramatic nature of the piece well. (A.I.)
