'The American Album' by the Cypress String Quartet is a stunning appreciation of the American musical spirit from 1893-1936, headlined by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's "American" Quartet, with works by Charles Griffes, Samuel Barber - his Quartet, Op 11 includes the famous "Adagio" - and contemporary composer Kevin Puts.
The Cypress String Quartet debuted on Avie with a recording of their namesake work, Dvorak's "Cypresses" coupled with the composer's expansive G major Quartet, No. 13 (AV2275), "a lovely performance", according to International Record Review. The Czech composer features again in the ensemble's American Album with his beloved "American" Quartet, which shares the program with Barber's String Quartet - featuring the famous Adagio central movement - and "Two Sketches Based on Indian Themes" by Charles Griffes.
"The Cypress Quartet play with taut rhythms and great tonal refinement, both as individuals and in a beautifully rounded ensemble sound. A reflective approach to the more lyrical moments of the Dvorak...gives the pleasing impression that you're in the room with them while they're playing for their own enjoyment." BBC Music Five Stars
