An accomplished modern punk album, full of catchy tunes and killer guitar riffs. Includes the smash singles "Longview", "Basket Case" & "When I Come Around".

"This is an accomplished modern punk album from the American rock trio, Green Day - full of catchy tunes and killer guitar riffs. From opening "Burnout" through to the finale "F.O.D.", 'Dookie' is an explosive, melodic collection of fun, bratty songs that demand attention.

Originally formed in California as Sweet Children when they were only 14 years old, Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass) were soon joined by drummer John Kiftmeyer and decided to re-name themselves after one of their songs - Green Day. In 1991, the threesome released their debut recording, an EP called '1,000 Hours', which was a hit with the local punks. Hooked up by independent label, Lookout Records, their first album '39 / Smooth' was also issued the same year. At this point, Kiftmeyer quit the band to attend college and was replaced by Tre Cool (John's former drum teacher). By now, Green Day's popularity had increased above cult status, and gained further momentum with the release of their hyperactive sophomore album, 'Kerplunk' in 1992.

The band then signed with major label, Reprise Records to release 'Dookie' in 1994. With the irresistible, smash singles "Longview", "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around", Green Day's unique blend of punk rock energy, melodious riffs and self-deprecating charm struck a loud chord with the youth market. It provided the perfect, playful soundtrack to the lives of estranged teens everywhere, encapsulating their angst, rebelliousness and emotional disarray. 'Dookie' went on to sell over eleven million copies and Green Day became known as the band that sparked the neo-punk revival. They introduced a whole new generation to the energised, sneering sounds of The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, et al, inspiring groups such as Offspring and Rancid to follow suit with their contemporary take on punk. Green Day received worldwide critical acclaim and later in '94 they won a Grammy for "Best Alternative Music Performance".

Many other good albums followed, most notably 'Insomniac' (1995), 'Nimrod' (1996) and the excellent 'American Idiot ' (2004). Still, it is 'Dookie' that arguably epitomises everything musically and attitude-wise that Green Day stands for, remaining a firm favourite with those schooled in the ways of rock."
