Glenn Hughes
Building the Machine

[ Steamhammer Records / CD ]

Release Date: Tuesday 2 October 2001

This cool rock / funk installment from "The Voice Of Rock". includes Glenn's new rendition of Deep Purple's "Highball Shooter"!

Glenn Hughes has been making up for lost time over the last decade. From the time after Deep Purple split in 1976 until the late 80s, he hardly released anything as he was in a drug haze. Over the past decade he's had a new album out every year and all have proved he's still one of the best singers in the business.

With 'Building The Machine' he has reached a new high, and it's all very musical! Not only is his voice in fantastic form, his bass playing is right on the money and the songwriting is top quality. This is surely the best solo album that he has released, as it hard rock funks it's way into your mind.

Some of the many highlights are "I Just Want To Celebrate" with guest guitarist Pat Travers (this absolutely cooks!), the very passionately performed "Feels Like Home" and Glenn's new version of "Highball Shooter" (originally on Deep Purple's 'Stormbringer' masterpiece LP).

The album closes with slower numbers, "Beyond the Numb" and "Big Sky" which are dedicated to friends of Glenn's that died last year. "Beyond the Numb" has a dark and moody soundscape with slightly unusual bass line and mysterious vibe. It's a perfect vehicle for one of Glenn's most passionate vocal performance, drenched in emotion - just listen to his screams on the outro. Very elegant and effective!

'Building The Machine' is a "must have" album for anyone into Purple, hard rock, funk and especially if you want to hear an amazing singer in action.
