One of Broadway's most celebrated composers before he was out of his teens, Gershwin used to say that he had more tunes in his head than he could ever put on paper. In his short, driven life-he died tragically at the age of 38-he wrote hundreds of songs, as well as some of the world's most popular orchestral pieces ("Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris") and a pathbreaking opera, Porgy and Bess. Gershwin was the first-and perhaps the greatest-"crossover" artist; his vibrant and inspired music combined great melodies and classical stylings with the syncopated rhythms and forceful energy of jazz.
No wonder he influenced artists ranging from Leonard Bernstein and Miles Davis to Paul Simon and Tony Bennett.
