Cesaria Evora
Voz D'Amor

[ RCA Records / CD ]

Release Date: Monday 22 September 2003

14-song collection from a most distinctive and treasured vocalist. Classic songs of Cesaria's island nation plus compositions written exclusively for her

Evora's career trajectory has been a story unto itself. In her teens and early twenties, she sang in Cape Verdean clubs and on radio shows. However, she quit singing professionally to raise a family. She didn't return to the stage until 1985. Three years later she was invited to Paris by a French record label owner with Cape Verdean bloodlines to record La Diva Aux Pieds Nus (The Barefoot Diva) which found favour first in the expatriate Cape Verdean community in France and soon after throughout Europe. The U.S. didn't "discover" Evora until 1995 with the release of her self-titled album that became a hit and was nominated for a Grammy. Several of her albums, previously issued in Europe, were subsequently re-released in the U.S. To date, she has sold more than four million albums worldwide, garnered several gold records and been nominated for five Grammys.

The ascent of Cesaria Evora, one of popular music's most distinctive and treasured vocalists, continues with her newest album, Voz D'Amor (Portuguese for Voice of Love). The 14-song collection features Evora singing classic songs of her island nation as well as new compositions written exclusively for her voice.

The Barefoot Diva bookends Voz D'Amor with captivating mornas (slow-paced, blues-steeped songs with mournful lyrics). In addition to the slow, mournful numbers, Cesaria accelerates the tempo for several tunes. - highlights include "Velocidade" ("Velocity") and "Pomba" ("The Dove").
