Wiley's debut album captures the distinctive and edgy he has been pioneering.
Wiley is an artist who has been involved in the underground scene for years and is one of the most respected producers in his field. He formed the Roll Deep Crew (once boasting Dizzee Rascal as a member), who have been spearheading the new sound emerging from the ashes of UK Garage. Wiley's glacial, string-led track "Eskimo", alongside Dizzee's "I Luv U", kick-started this new sound that fuses ragga, US rap, UK garage and jungle lifting Wiley's profile to legendary street-status.
Wiley's debut album, 'Treddin' On Thin Ice', is a collection of Wiley anthems and brand new offerings that captures the distinctive and edgy eski-beat sound that Wiley has been pioneering. It also hints at a wealth of talent out there waiting to come through, as up-and coming MCs from the scene feature as guest vocalists throughout the album.
The general grime/garage/MC-led movement is yet to be given a name and this is addressed in Wiley's debut single "Wot Do U Call It?", Wiley calls his sound Eski Beat and his unique production is easily identifiable. His influences include Greek, Chinese and African music, Kung-Fu films and he often uses crazy and unusual samples like bird calls in his music.
