Nelson Freire is probably one of the best-kept secrets in the world of the piano. The international press has acclaimed him as one of the greatest pianists of our time, comparing him to legendary greats such as Sergei Rachmaninov, Arthur Rubinstein and Glenn Gould.
A star in his home country of Brazil, he has been described in the USA as a 'hurricane of pianistic power', and his deep intimate relationship with music has made him the 'pianist of pianists' who 'seems to have a tiny brain in each finger', making 'playing the piano as natural and easy as breathing'. His career stretches over 40 years, some of which has been spent performing with his duo partner Martha Argerich. Despite such accolades and commendations Nelson Freire has avoided the spotlight, focusing on developing musically with friends and music enthusiasts. David Shallon was one of the most important conductors of the last quarter of the 20th century. He conducted the leading orchestras in the world such as the Israel Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Prague Symphony, Orchestras of Basle and of Bern with the participation of eminent soloist such as Alicia de Larrocha, Tabea Zimmermann, Gidon Kremer, Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern and Frank Peter Zimmermann. In his last position he was the Artistic Manager and conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony. He passed away at the age of 50 on a concert tour in Japan.
On this DVD, Shallon conducts the renowned Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana based in Lugano. Consisting of 41 permanent musicians, the orchestra regularly invites soloists and guest conductors to perform together.
