Steven de Groote, a pianist from South Africa, won the Gold Medal at the 1977 Van Cliburn Competition. He died in 1989, at 36, from the lingering effects of a 1985 plane crash.

After his death, the Van Cliburn Foundation initiated the 'Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music' which is given to outstanding performers until today. In this performance we can hear that de Groote was a very special artist. He makes the shifting moods of the Chopin Piano Concerto completely convincing. A beautiful memorial to a great artist. The Croatian conductor Milan Horvat belongs to the most prominent conductors of his home country. He started his career in 1946 as conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Zagreb. Between 1969 and 1975 Horvat was Chief Conductor of the ORF Symphony Orchestra in Vienna. Since then, he has worked with all leading orchestras and has toured the whole world. For ten years, he was musical director of the Zagreb Opera.

On this DVD, Horvat conducts the renowned Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana based in Lugano. Consisting of 41 permanent musicians, the orchestra regularly invites soloists and guest conductors to perform together.
