Tropical Downbeat Orchestra

Introducing the Tropical Downbeat Orchestra - a seven-piece collective who are in their element when laying down thick groove-based funk, soul and jazz, as they do on this, their self-titled debut album.

Together now for just shy of two years, they have gained a strong reputation for their live shows, with an epic, non-stop, marathon live show, often lasting for over three hours!

Formed and based in the Hawke's Bay, they have established a loyal following through their musical residencies, both in Napier [The Windsock] and Wellington [Chow/Cabaret], and have been lighting up the stage at numerous Jazz and Funk festivals around the country: Waiheke Island Jazz, Music Mountain Matakana, Toast Martinborough and Church Road Jazz for two years running; as well as scoring the coveted opening slot for the legendary funk band Tower of Power.

'Tropical Downbeat Orchestra' was recorded live at the Century Theatre in Napier in July 2006. Working on this live album were some of the most respected engineers and producers in the country, namely Paul Crowther [Split Enz], David Holmes [Paul McLaney etc.] and the legendary Mu from Fat Freddys Drop.

Tropical Downbeat Orchestra believed in attempting to capture the raw energy of their live show to record their debut album, a glorious masterstroke which highlights the musical talents of this no samples, 7-piece band - live and direct.
