Where 1982's 'Pornography' explored the bleaker elements of life in a dark, seething soundscape, 1984's 'The Top' showed a remarkable eclecticism, as Smith experimented with pop melodies (most notably on hit single "The Caterpillar"), exotic instruments strange tunings. A key era in the development of The Cure, 1984-1987 saw Smith coming into his own as he pushed the creative boundaries of his band. The Cure's music from the time is truly essential listening.
