Calloway was no ordinary band-leader who stood in front beating time for his men. He danced around the stage, hair flopping wildly, conducting with an absurdly long baton, almost shouting his vocals. In 1934 the band came to Europe and created a sensation in London and Manchester. In fact, this flamboyant bandleader - no, entertainer - was a sensation wherever he played. They appeared in several movies, notably "The Big Broadcast", "The Singing Kid" with Al Jolson, "Manhattan Merry-Go-Round", "Stormy Weather" and "Sensations of 1945". Broadway also played host to the effervescent charms of Calloway when a new production of Gershwin's "Porgy And Bess" opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre in March 1953.In 1967 he played opposite Pearl Bailey in the all-black version of "Hello Dolly" which ran for just over three years. He also starred in the ANTA production of "Bubbling Brown Sugar" in 1976 and in "Eubie" at the Ambassador Theatre in 1978 for a year's run. He came to England for the BBC documentary "The Cotton Club Comes To The Ritz" on TV, then toured America with "The Cotton Club Revisited". His appearance in the 1980 film "The Blues Brothers", essentially playing himself as a colourful band-leader, brought him to the attention of a new, younger audience.
