[ Rough Trade Records / CD ]

Release Date: Tuesday 4 December 2007

This CD pulls together the tracks that defined the UK music scene from 2002-2004 and includes six UK Top 40 hits, two Bernard Butler-produced singles, along with fan picks, live favourites and popular b-sides.

'Time for Heroes' is the first 'Best Of' album from top-selling English band The Libertines. This collection is a timely reminder of the unique talent of Albion's favourite sons Pete Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall and Gary Powell.

Although their mainstream success was limited in the beginning, their profile and popularity grew, culminating in a #2 UK single for "Can't Stand Me Now" and a #1 position in the UK Charts for their self-titled album.

The Libertines were arguably the single most influential British band of the early 2000s and are credited with having a huge influence on not just British music, but also on fashion. Centered around the songwriting partnership and chemistry of Carl Barât and bad boy Pete Doherty, their music was often overshadowed by its internal conflicts, many of which stemmed from Doherty's excessive drug use, ultimately resulting in the breakup of the band. Doherty has since gone on to form Babyshambles and Barat fronts Dirty Pretty Things.

'Time for Heroes' pulls together the tracks that defined the UK music scene at the time. It spans 2002-2004 and includes six UK Top 40 hits, plus two Bernard Butler-produced singles 'Don't Look Back In To The Sun' and 'What A Waster', which have never previously been available on either of The Libertines albums along with fan picks, live favourites and popular b-sides.

"The Libertines were the best and most influential band of the last decade that you've probably never heard properly - now's your chance."
- Rough Trade boss Geoff Travis.
