The debut from Wellington band Vibrant Tongues is an album of intense subtleties, shifting feels and textures, collective improvisation and urban dialogues.
'The Shadow out of Time' is the first independent release from the Wellington band Vibrant Tongues, featuring Blair Latham, Tom Callwood & Reuben Bradley. The album was recorded in late 2006 at STL audio in Wellington.
After initially meeting at the Jazz School in the late 90s, Blair, Tom and Reuben played together in many different ensembles, until they decided to collaborate on an album of original compositions. Work-shopping the music over a couple of years at various Wellington hot spots including Chow's Cabaret, Happy, The Lido and Jazz festival concerts through-out NZ. The end result was an album of intense subtleties, shifting feels and textures, collective improvisation and urban dialogues.
The group draw stylistic influence from jazz pioneers such as Ornette Coleman, Andrew Hill, Anthony Braxton and the modern NY jazz sound of artists such as Chris Speed, Jim Black and Henry Threadgill.
