Akaname are a 7-piece technical grind group based in Wellington, who take their name from a Japanese storybook demon - translating literally as "Filthlicker" - which is neither good nor evil, but nourishes itself with human filth.

"Fans of Cephalic Carnage, Meshuggah, Carbomb and Psyopus - take note NZ's Akaname could well be on their way to becoming the next legendary technical grind act."
- INVARIABLY DIFFERENT FANZINE

Akaname are a 7-piece technical grind group based in Wellington, who take their name from a Japanese storybook demon - translating literally as "Filthlicker" - which is neither good nor evil, but nourishes itself with human filth.

The group was originally conceived in 2002 but it wasn't until 2005 that Otis Chamberlain, Ben Jackson and Matt Payne converged in Welli to begin Akaname proper, adding vocalist Kallie Sparkle and Matt Faisandier on keys. Since their debut performance at a sweaty Cuba Street house party in Welli, Akaname now has an impressive live presence, playing as many shows as possible - festivals, gigs, shows and house parties - with a sound encompassing elements of grindcore, post-rock, tech-metal, hardcore, improvised free-noise and stoner rock.

Recorded with Mike Gibson at Inca Studios in Welli and mastered by Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage), Filthlicker is their debut. Get in touch for A4 and A3 colour posters of the Akaname cover, drawn by Mephisto Jones! Since the recording of Filthlicker, vocalist Sparkles has been replaced by ex-Greymalkin frontman Gareth Craze.
