La Difference

'La Difference' album from Salif Keita is to benefit a charitable foundation that raises awareness and strengthens support for Albino people.

"It probably doesn't matter to Salif Keita whether his new album is considered remarkable. An individualist out of the same mould as Bob Dylan and Neil Young, Keita fought his way to the top in his native Mali despite being born a despised albino and of noble lineage (although the family were poor) and forbidden to play music. His grainy voice has graced three epoch-defining masterpieces (1978's Mandjou, 1987's Soro and 2002's Moffou), several mediocrities and a couple of shockers. While this new album consists mostly of reworked material and Keita's now growly voice sounds positively somnolent in places, it contains numerous, spookily affecting moments. Even at its frailest, Keita's voice generates intensity and hearing it impassioned on Samiga, the years fall away."
