Soundtracks and Inventions (feat. Pedro Carneiro)

Subject2change is a group of six musicians from diverse musical backgrounds all residents in Dunedin.

Playing their own brand of jazz-fusion, each member of the group brings a different set of influences and experiences to the music they create. They have all worked in different sectors of the music industry, performing alongside some of the top names in jazz, rock, classical and world music internationally.

On the bands 2011 2 disc release Soundtracks & Inventions rather than follow a spontaneous approach to improvisation that would be familiar to fans of early experimental jazz, the band verbally 'rehearsed' an aleatoric approach to theoretical performance concepts prior to a three-day recording session in December 2009. The band then recorded in a 'live' context within a studio setting, resulting in CD1 of this release, 'Soundtracks'

The process was repeated in May 2010 when Subject2change performed with Portuguese percussion virtuoso, Pedro Carneiro. The large recording room at Dunedin's Albany Street studio was set up for a public concert and the band recorded almost two hours of improvised music. Following a similar approach to the recording in December 2009, there was a theoretical composition plan established prior to the performance. This concert resulted in the second CD of this set, 'Inventions'.

The performances both feature a combination of funk, rock and jazz influences.
