Omara Portuondo is the tiny, velvet-voiced diva of the Buena Vista Social Club, still waif-like at 80. Chucho Valdes, the son of Bebo Valdés is the gigantic genius of Cuban jazz piano, who is now the island's greatest instrumentalist at a mere 69.
'Omara & Chucho' is a set of unhurried Latin ballads where Portuondo's husky delivery and phrasing is amplified and elucidated by Valdés' lush, grand chords. Apart from an exquisitely eloquent trumpet solo from Wynton Marsalis, there's just the two of them - each knows when to hold back and let the other stretch out.
