Ska music was essentially the soundtrack to Jamaica's independence and the first genre to emerge from the island that was successfully imported to the rest of the world. The origins of Ska, like most important styles of music, are multi-layered and complex but the three main arteries that pumped the life blood into the sound were traditional Caribbean Mento music, American Jump Blues and R'n'B.
This compilation charts the early and most vital years of Ska as it was a fledgling sound that was not only omnipresent in Jamaica but was beginning to influence musical culture beyond the confines of the island. All of the great Ska artists are represented here with tracks from The Skatalites, Duke Reid, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals, and many, many more.
