An extremely popular artist from the early 1950s, Tennessee Ernie Ford expanded his fan base as the decade wore on, crossing over onto the pop charts with such hits as 'Sixteen Tons' and 'Give Me Your Word'. His first appearance on the album charts came with 'This Lusty Land', a top twenty success in 1956 and the first of some seventeen hit albums over the next fourteen years. He also combined recording success with hosting a television quiz show and later his own variety show.
