A stunning guitar player, Johnny "Guitar" Watson also had a skill for reinvention, morphing from a top west coast blues session player in the 1950s into a monster R&B and funk player by the 1970s and 1980s. That shift to being a funkster is what's covered here (with a couple of '90s tracks thrown in for good measure), and this collection has his signature tunes from this "reinvention" period, including the R&B smashes "A Real Mother for Ya," "Gangster of Love," and "Superman Lover." There's more to Watson's story, of course, but a good deal of the fire and thunder he's known for as a guitarist is here. - AllMusic
