Island Records signed the truly original undiluted talent of John Martyn in 1967 but could hardly have anticipated the creative daring that was to make him one of the pre-eminent artists of the 1970s.
Martyn appeared from nowhere but soon came to embody everything that was good about progressive singer songwriters. He established an impeccable pedigree by releasing a string of highly acclaimed albums and by just being himself - playing music straight from his heart. Stagnation was his biggest fear and he continued to explore musical frontiers throughout his forty year plus career.
This 4CD set, 'The Best of the Island Years', includes 56 hidden gems showing Martyn at the height of his creativity on the label, all out-takes, unreleased songs and rare live recordings!
