From the beginning of his career, Dave Brubeck wanted to extend the harmonic and rhythmic jazz register to include forms taken from contemporary music. He experienced some setbacks before his resolutely forward-looking ideas of harmony were accepted, along with his conception of composition, counterpoint and poly-tonality. He was celebrated primarily as a jazz musician and long misunderstood as an innovator.
