For the whole of her quiet existence, Ella Fitzgerald lived to sing. Unlike Billie Holiday, she kept her private life low-key, drama-free and serene. There is no better way to understand every aspect of her huge talent than by listening to a live record. In the space of a single evening, she could sing blues, jazz, even variety music and hits from musicals, and also improvised music (scat) pulsing with a swing beat, or more subdued songs. A fan of small ensembles, thanks to which her role as a vocalist was accentuated, she was able to explore every possible emotion, moving from one to another with an unusually intense stage presence.
