Our Rotten Roots

Given his near two-decade quest to create minimalist dance music shot through with the warm weight of dub, you'd expect this EP from Scott 'Deadbeat' Monteith to hit the spot. It does, of course, though it's noticeably bolder and more 'in-your-face' than much of his output. While A-side "Put On Your Red Shoes & Trance" is typically hypnotic and stretched-out, it's power comes from Monleith's manipulation of raw, Plastikman style acid lines. Flipside "Just Jackin Around Man" pushes the producer's banging percussion to the fore, with subtle cymbal hits, occasional drum fills and quirky vocal samples combining brilliantly with a simple synth riff.
