Richard Heuberger (1850-1914) was born into a well-to-do middle-class family from Graz. He trained initially as an engineer, but after studying for a degree in music, he was appointed director of the Vienna Singakademie. Heuberger created many instrumental compositions, ballets, cantatas and operas, and worked as a music journalist. Perhaps his best-known work is the superbly orchestrated and colourful operetta "The Opera Ball" (1898). The film version from 1970 features stars like Harald Serafin, Tatjana Iwanow, Uwe Friedrichsen and the great Heinz Erhardt.
