In July of 1960, Max Roach and Charles Mingus - in search fo fair treatment for African-American performers - organised a "rebel festival" to coincide with the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. Roach's celebrated LP 'We Insist! Freedom Now Suite' with lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr., is fuelled by the energy of the civil rights movement. The ambiance of rebellion, coupled with the increasing development of the Civil Rights and Black Pride movements, provides the context for both a brilliant piece of music, and a powerful political and social statement.
