Two yanks and a limey! No, not the ingredients for a smooth cocktail but for one of the first vocal super-groups in jazz. Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross formed their unique trio in 1957 and kicked off with the classic vocalese album Sing A Song Of Basie which garnered such lavish praise from the Count himself that they went on to make a second album, Sing Along With Basie in 1959. Count Basie, Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, Tommy Flanagan, Jim Hall, Elvin Jones, Freddie Green, Harry Edison, Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Frank Wess and Joe Williams. The original group splintered in 1962 when British born Annie Ross left for a spectacular solo career as a jazz singer. They left behind a string or Grammy awards and a highly influential sound that has often been copied but never bettered.
