Curtis Mayfield made his first recordings in 1958 as a member of a Chicago Soul/R & B group, The Impressions. He was 16, from the Chicago's notorious Cabrini Green Housing Projects. By 1968 he started Curtom Records and was in control of his recording, song publishing and recording studio.

'Keep On Keeping On' contains Curtis' first four studio albums REMASTERED and similar to some of his later Impressions work, Mayfield's lyrics reflected the social and political concern rising in black America at the time. Mayfield was one of the earliest artists to speak openly about African-American pride and community struggle.
