Ranging from the 18th century to the music of our time, this collection of critically acclaimed recordings explores the significant contribution to solo piano repertoire made by a wide variety of women composers. These rare and important pieces include the works of the celebrated pianist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy and of Hélène de Montgeroult, whose sonatas are distinctive additions to the Classical and early Romantic periods. Maria Szymanowska's deft dances contrast with the fearsome demands of Teresa Carreño, herself a great virtuoso. VítÄ›zslava Kaprálová was the most important female Czech composer of the 20th century, while Agathe Backer Grøndahl was one of Norway's most respected composer-pianists. Tanya Ekanayaka continues the lineage in her own diverse and hybrid pieces.

"The pianist Nicolas Horvath brings to light the music of Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy, hitherto unpublished. A delightful encounter with a refined artist and a woman of spirit." La Croix

"Horvath makes appealingly light work of her [Hélène de Montgeroult] nine keyboard sonatas, several recorded for the first time." The Guardian

"…Kostritsa's work in collecting these dances is commendable, as is his approach. In the Polonaises, his straightforward playing captures well the simple phrasing, form, and rather nondescript melody. …these works are pleasing." American Record Guide [Maria Szymanowsk]

"Giorgio Koukl casts the beauty and complexity of Kapralova's music in the best possible light, thereby enabling the composer's legacy to 20th-century European music to be known and appreciated." MusMag Italia

"Hiroko Ishimoto has a clean technique and is very effective in works like the Chaminade Valse-Caprice. I was very taken with her shaping of the opening piece… On the whole this is an attractively presented album that will hopefully provide a springboard for exploring more of the music of these composers."
